The [Kodak EC35 35mm Film Camera](https://www.kodak.retopro.co/products/kodak-ec35-br-35mm-film-camera?variant=51265201668260) is the kind of cheap gear that makes your cart finger twitch. US$34.99 is not proper camera money, and it is barely more than a servo disposable once you squint at the exchange rate. That low price is the hook. The question for us is simpler: will this thing live in the glovebox for road trips and nights out, or spend six months in a drawer before the bin gets it?

The EC35 is a Kodak-badged 35mm point-and-shoot made by [Reto Project](https://www.kodak.retopro.co/products/kodak-ec35-br-35mm-film-camera?variant=51265201668260). It has a slide cover, a 102g body and controls kept basic enough that nobody needs a camera course before loading a roll. That matters more than the nostalgia chat. Cheap gear is brilliant when it actually gets used. When the novelty dies before the first roll comes back from processing, it is just dead money with a cute colourway.

As a carry-around toy, the idea checks out. A 102g body can disappear into a camping crate, a glovebox or a jacket pocket without needing a padded case and a lecture. If you miss handing a cheap camera around at a barbecue, a surf trip or a bucks weekend, the EC35 understands the job: small, light, not precious.

## The cheap bit cuts both ways

The bargain price comes with specs that sit only a step above disposable territory. Its [25mm f/10 lens and fixed 1/100-second shutter](https://www.kodak.retopro.co/products/kodak-ec35-br-35mm-film-camera?variant=51265201668260) point to bright days, close-enough framing and zero fuss. They also rule out plenty: dim pubs, fast-moving kids, grey winter afternoons, or any shot where you need the camera to save you from bad light. Buy it expecting crisp keepers at night and you are probably donating a roll to the bin.

That is the bit that stops this being an easy yes. The body is cheap; film and processing are not. A US$34.99 camera can still turn into an expensive laugh if half the roll comes back soft, dark or weirdly exposed. The EC35 looks more honest as a daylight memory-maker than as a clever way into serious film photography.

Reto Project is selling that simplicity hard. In a line carried by [PetaPixel](https://petapixel.com/2026/07/17/the-kodak-ec35-35mm-film-camera-brings-back-the-iconic-slide-cover/), the company said the EC35 “strips away the complexity of film photography, putting the pure joy back into every frame.”

Fair enough. Plenty of us do not want to learn film properly. We just want a dumb little camera that makes a weekend look different to the phone shots already sharpened and HDR’d to death.

The slide cover, featherweight body and no-settings approach suit that buyer better than they suit the camera nerd hunting value.

Where we would be careful is the gap between fun and false economy. The [Kodak product listing](https://www.kodak.retopro.co/products/kodak-ec35-br-35mm-film-camera?variant=51265201668260) makes the EC35 look like an easy impulse buy, and it probably is if you treat it as a novelty carry for daylight snaps. Ask it to do more and the maths gets shakier. A cheap point-and-shoot is only cheap if it gets enough usable shots to justify the rolls you feed it.

So our early read is simple. The EC35 looks like a decent nostalgia toy for beach days, camping weekends and messy nights where grainy, imperfect photos are part of the point.

It does not look like the sensible answer for anyone hoping to replace a phone, learn proper film craft or squeeze maximum value from every roll. Fun? Very possibly. Landfill? Also possible, if you buy it for the wrong job. That might be the most honest thing about a US$34.99 film camera.
