Am wondering if he sent it ballistic there so it would crash where he wanted it to rather than where it wanted.

More likely a deep-stall and diversion from what can be seen - F-18 pilots can get to rely on those leading edge extensions a little too much for high angle-of-attack manouverers. US$35 million fly-away Dready, God knows what that is in Canadian dollars He did a good job getting out out at that angle, probably put a dent in the defense budget though Cheers

Musta thought he was driving a Flanker. Although, that said, I'm pretty sure I've seen at least one Flanker and a Mig-29 go down in almost the exact same circumstances.

Yeah, by the standards of Canadian defense spending, that's a rather expensive oops.

Yeah Ry, Anatoly Kovachur lost a -29, Paris I think, might have been Farnborough, I have it on tape.
He banged out, lost an engine at about the worst possible place, top of a tight immelmann.
The Flanker was in the Ukraine - more tragic, the crew ejected but people were killed on the ground.
I suppose it depends a little in terms on value to Canada on how late a block that pile of scrap was, their -18s face the same problem as ours, need re-barreling - ageing out.
Canadian air force pilots have a rather well deserved reputation for pushing it hard, some may recall the total loss of the Snow Goose display team many years ago, the entire formation followed the leader, straight into the ground....
Cheers

I'll still be around long after -18s are serving gate-guard duty or mouldering at Davis Monthan mate Cheers
