The best bar you've had a beer in...
« on: February 22, 2007, 02:20:26 PM »
What's the best bar you've ever been in, not just atmosphere but the whole package (besides this one of coarse)

I'll kick off with a gem my 19yo son and I drank in in Blois, France. It was bloody swish and before our beers had been poured we had already been invited to sit with a group of the locals. Not something that happens in every pub!

Anyway this place was origionally the wine celler for the castle up the road around 500 years ago, so they had a head start on the atmosphere front.
Beer was pricey though at 6 euro for a 500ml glass ( around $10 )

The Yambuk Inn, small country town pub.

Friendly atmosphere, colourful locals, the best fun I've ever had at a pub has been when I've been down home and gone out with friends in Yambuk.

Went to a great pub/bar in Kew in Victoria with a few mates some years ago. Very swish, very posh. Then a bunch of blokes with striking resemblances to bikies walked in and ordered a bunch of beers. The locals weren't too please, we cleared that place within 2 hrs.

The bar staff were damn good value tho' and looked after us yobbos.

WOW!!! Where to start. Good question... umm... err...

I think that for the whole 'experience' I would have to say the 'Christmas Island Club' in the small township of 'The Settlement' on Christmas Island. It's set up in the hills overlooking the town. You can see the whole bay, surrounding cliffs and out into the Indian Ocean.

Because of the northerly aspect, and the fact that it's on a small island, you get the unique privilege of being able to watch the sun rise and set over the water! The food is pretty good if a little pricey, but you more than make up for this by being able to head down to the beach after dinner and enjoy some duty free grog and cigars.

I've had better beer, I've had better food, but nothing has ever matched that experience for me.

The Nindigully Pub.

Pics dont do it justice of course and without actually sitting in the place you dont get a feel for it.

Perhaps it's just that it was always so goddamn hot out there that the beer always tasted so goddamn nice.

"The Other Place" in centrum Amsterdam. Walked in to get out of the rain and there was half a dozen locals including the barmen, watching Pulp Fiction, the sound in Dutch on the big screen. When they realised I could only speak Australian, they changed the language on the bigscreen to accomadate their visitor. Carried out their conversations in english while I was at the table they invited me to sit at. By the end of the night we could all speak swahili. Spent many long nights in there over the following month.

mmm had to think about this one for a while...

It would have to be The Office, Port Vila, Vanuatu

They've since changed the name but I hear the atmosphere is still there. It's the fav pub for the ex-pats.

A tiny one in a back alley in London...The Devereux, I think it was called.

Had just done a nightwalk tour thing and the guide was heading there for dinner, so we tagged along and had some brews and watched England play France in the European Cup.
