Oil Ussage
« on: January 13, 2015, 06:11:01 PM »
Hi,
I am a newbee from Australia,I own a 2005 Softtail classic which I bought second hand 12 months ago.The bike had been imported from USA by a dealer with only 7000kms.The bike is using a lot of Oil a tank every 1000 kms but the dealer says this is inside the Harley Specs, can any one help ? There is no smoke or oil drips but the saddle bag on the exhaust side gets quite black and gunky.
Regards Keefy

Thats way, WAY out of spec. To be brutally honest... sounds like the rings are fucked and the odo has been dodged.

My 05 takes 2.5 litres to replace every oil change and is lucky to use 100mls between changes every 5000 klicks.

Your engine has bulk wear in the top end if its burning that much oil man. Go give the stealer (dealer) a knuckle sanga and get them to make it right... thats bullshit about oil consumption.

If you get it rebuilt yourself then give us a yell for a good engine recipe.

:)

Y'know of all the people to mess about with over a sale I'd reckon a Harley rider would be one you'd place kinda low on the list, have fun ;)

:)

Geez... are they still alive? :)

There's a very, very funny story about those guys that relates to a guy some of us here know, really nice guy, who went down there to get a decent lock, for his scooter, that he rode with no fear into the Harley Den :)

I still can't drive past the place without a smile :)

You'd  surprised Chris ... most Stealerships see HD owners as cashed up yuppies / dumb asses and try to rob them blind.

Charging bullshit amounts for labor (vastly exaggerated times)

Charging parts + 30-50% markup

Stealing parts from low mileage bikes and replacing with worn items

Selling dodged up bikes and bullshitting their way out of warranty issues.

Man I've seen it all in a 1/4 century of messing around with bikes and cars.

More like 50% LD

My Aussie HD ownership breakup looks like this:

1%ers = 5%
Long term bikers who love the bloody things= 20%
Yuppies who sell them again at the first fleeting sign of a downturn= 50%
Pseudo tough blokes who sell them again after 3 yrs max after their image crisis is over= 25%

Its only the first 2 I try and have anything to do with.

Interesting...

I've never owned a Harley, but do like them, I sort of wondered why once but reality is they are just a plain, honest bike -with balls :)

It's being from Europe I guess, Triumphs, Nortons, Ducatis, but, hey, they're all bikes :)

I guess I can sort of see where a stealer might come from - every impression I've ever had of a Harley is that you buy it and look after it yourself, for which the same could be very much said of the bikes I used to ride. So, if you need to be getting it serviced maybe you are a bit of a wannabe ?

It sort of reminds me - to go for a near compete derail, of an early Scene in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" real rider and sort of wannabe, discussing a bit of fork shimming over a beer - wannabe wants to go get BMW shims, real rider says he's holding perfectly fine shims - beer can :)

A really good book if you have not read it :)

(Has fuck all to do with bikes though ;) )

Cheers

 :)

I kinda thought you might have - long time ago for me as well.

It was sort of in the mix of some weird literature that we read, some of which turned to movies, but I'd think ZatAoMM" might be a bit of a challenge unless you just let the message of the book vanish... Better shut up, sounds exactly like what happens to good books in Hollywood :)
