The only thing that makes linux fall on its ass
« on: September 03, 2013, 06:45:51 PM »

Video Editors.

Honestly I've tried every motherf*cking *nix video editing app on the god damn planet and they all suck major wang.

If I could get my hands on a *nix version of vegas pro with a timeline, fx and all the editing,  transcode and output options I could kick windoze to the kerb forever.

I suppose this would be the wrong thread in which to mention that I actually LIKE Windoze and every Linux distro I've ever tried has shit me to tears?  :whistling:

Dunno mate, not my gig, Middy might know of something, have to talk to him tonight, but why not just chuck it up to the community? That's the beauty of Open Source :)

Cheers

Edit: I still endure on Windows, but it's for different reasons, I support the shit :)

hehehe.  But audacity in itself is built on several other components.  It's the wonders of the soundcard.

However, I never have a problem with video on linux EXCEPT xconf.  We will never discuss xconf again.

The same is true of most *nix apps, they're all modularised.

Vid playback I have no issue with, its editing that's the drama

Linux has to be one of the most annoying things invented.
It's neither one thing nor another.

Having to mount a drive and all that crap everytime you want to do something is rubbish.

They need a proper GUI.

A proper GUI exists.  Just look at the 300 different options available..  All of which have fanboi's shouting how good their particular one is.

I really love linux.  But it's like Christians.  The Christian fanbois are the biggest turnoff.

At the end of the day:
Linux: <enter dodgy command> OK you're the boss....  *BREAK*
Windows: <Enter useful command> Are you really sure you want to do that?  *BREAK*

Got to disagree.

Windoze is point and click and has been since the days of Win '98.

Sometimes, even now, you have to open a DOS command line.

And sure, Vista was a pain in the ass.

But compare any modern version of Windows to Linux and well, I'm going to send my $ to Redmond.

Les and Jamie :

Ubuntu.

Auto mounts everything I've thrown at it .. windows ntfs, SD cards, removable drives, etc.   .. also happens to be point and click and totally usable on a lappy (used to be the hardest shit under the sun to get nix working on a lappy)

Suggest you check out 12.04 ... windoze finally has a serious challenger ..

I'll  make a reasonable bet you have not tried Linux Mint, even my not too IT literate daughter can't tell it from Windoze ;)

But yeah, Ubuntu is cool, just wish my real serious tools had a version.

I've got to say...............I've been hearing that sort of thing for 10 years and have been continually disappointed.

BUT!
I'm willing to give it one more try.

What do you recommend?
Make a virtual machine or just plonk it on a spare hard drive and boot up from there?

I'm hearing you mate, ubuntu is the bomb and from the last 7yrs of using side by side with M$ ... its only a matter of time until shit gets ported or cloned.

Still waiting for a decent video editor but its coming to be sure ... pro tools for sec and network already exist, just not exactly user friendly yet.

Les: I dual boot with win7 and honestly hardly use windows at all except to use sony vegas for my vid shit.

Suggest installing to a separate drive if you have that option, you can always wipe it if its not your go.

Honestly i've been fucking around with PC's as long as you guys have and I have a strong dislike for all things apple and all things MS. Don't get me wrong, I'm fluent as hell in their shit but for my own personal computing .. gimme ubuntu any day of the fucking week.

Things ubuntu sucks at: games and video editing.

Things ubuntu rocks at: finding and connecting to your internet, viruses .. what fucking viruses  haha .... software conflicts do not exist, period. Auto sorts drivers with excellence (caveat = video drivers - sometimes you need to configure that shit but ubuntu gives you a snappy GUI to do it with). Also if your having hardware hassle of some description then sorting it is as easy as a google search .. copy and paste , baby !!

IMO: win7 is more crashy on my 7yo lappy than ubuntu. Ubuntu boots heaps faster even after all the software loads on both O/S's. ubuntu has WAY better network connectivity, windows has shitloads of software you have to pay for or nick with warez, Ubuntu has shitloads of software that is free and also guaranteed to work  (read tested the shit out of it).

am I as fanboi ?  Fuck I hate that analogy but .. somewhat yes. Fanatical ? No. Level headed evaluation ? Yes. Make your own choices but hell, I'm sold on ubuntu.

You and many others mate, a spare here is about to get Ubuntued, my problem is that I have to support the great unwashed, especially in this new company you gave me the magic logo for.

I think I'm going to need an el cheapo Mac as well... of shit... house will need exorcising :)

But seriously, for the simple user Mint is da bomb :)

Richo, you were singing the Ubuntu song to me ages ago and I honestly gave it a try.

It just didn't work for me.

I'm glad it does for you. In that it is both free and seems to do what you need.

What I need is Windoze, Office and a PC that is compatible with the rest of the world and does what I need it to do, when I need it.

Sure, M$ has shit me to tears at times but the best way to have Linux fall on it's ass it to simply try to use it...

Besides the fact that I don't personally like it, I personally think it's a steaming pile of shit, the only thing it's ever done for me is drive me to drink I also have the problem of, it's not up to me...

In the real world, like it or not, most people use Windoze and well, I happen to live and work in the real world..

In the real world there is this very large network called the internet, you may have heard of it, it and just about every device that creates it in one way or another runs on Linux....

But we'll have to see what MS do next, 8 significantly underwhelmed.

Two people who I happen to rather like but also disagree with. At least in this case.

Richo, of course you not only live in the real world, but from what I know of you, you work a lot harder than I do and you've still managed to find the time to build a website that I rather like.

I dabble in all kinds of places on the net but I probably spend more time here than anywhere else

Chris, I'm going to be a little bit less nice to you because you should know the fuck better.

I've known you and Richo both for a long time but I've talked about tech stuff with you more than anyone else on the face of the Earth.

Yeah, I've heard of that thing called the Internet.

Yeah, most servers are on in some way Linux based.

I took over one forum that you were responsible for but didn't have the time for and this one when Richo needed some personal time.

I have been either a mod or an admin on half a dozen sites not including the ones I built myself including the one I rebuilt from scratch after it was hacked while under your watchful eye.

I got my first computer for Christmas in 1985. I've been online since before there WAS an online and yes, I'm aware that Linux is very widely used server side.

That hasn't a fucking thing to do with desktop workstations that 90+ % of use some version of Windoze.

I've not used Win 8 enough to have a credible opinion.

Win 7 is a great OS.

Vista was utter fucking crap.

XP is rather long in the tooth and M$ no longer wants to sell it or it support but back in the day, it was  a damned good OS, a major step away from Windoze on top of DOS, a major step up from Win 95/98 and the first time they managed to merge NT and DOS into one semi-coherent OS.

In short, yes gentlemen, we can agree to disagree but I do have some idea of what I'm talking about.

The vast majority of the world uses computers for relatively basic business/home office tasks and the vast majority of those computers use some version of Windows.

In other words, the real world and having compatibly with the real world.

Chris, from what I've seen of it, I do agree on Win 8 and I haven't a clue what the future is.

When I have some extra cash for a play computer I may give Chrome or Android more of a go.

Google is cashed up enough to give M$ a run for their money. Unfunded open source really isn't.

Richo, back to you, I know Linux has served you well it's just that it hasn't me and most everybody uses Windoze and most of those who don't use Macs.

To both of you, sure, Linux is very widely used on servers.

On the desktop, Windoze rules with Macs picking up most of the slack.

I agree with you on the popularity thing to be sure. my server stats for DW hits look like this: *runs off to get stats*

Windows: 63.6%
Mac: 21%
Linux: 11.5%
Mobile devices: the rest.

MS is losing ground. Those stats used to read windows in the 90 percentile range 4 yrs ago.

and out of interest .. browsers:

firefox: 23.4%
IE: 23.3%
chrome: 21.9%
safari: 17.3%
android: 5%
opera: 3.5%
weird shit; the rest.

I imagine DW stats are fairly real world representative, we average around 25,000 unique visitors / month out of the total ppl hitting the site.

Well if you're curious these are the stats you would see for me.

As far as PCs go, I'm entirely using Windows.

My smartphone is Android based but I seldom use it to visit here.

Other than my phone Firefox is my browser of choice and has been for years.

I have IE installed but only use it to test compatibility on sites I'm working on.

I've tried both Chrome and Safari but in the end went back to FF.

I do agree that MS is loosing ground but I wouldn't count them out yet.

Also, I'd assume most of the stats for DW are reflective of personal use.

I drop by DW most every day but it's also almost always from home where I can use whatever I want to.

On the business side, M$ has one hell of an installed base with Windows and Office and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I have no idea what the future may hold but right now M$ still owns the business world.

I haven't of my own choice used IE since around 2005 but I've had it shoved down my throat at work many times since then.

Word is still my word processing app of choice and Outlook is still the least bad mail client/personal organizer.

I personally have no reason to use Excel or PowerPoint but I do know how and it's good that I do since they are both still very widely used in business.

I think M$ is making a mistake in worrying about mobile devices and even more so in trying to make one OS for both.

I've not used Win8 all that much but on a phone or touchscreen lappie it's okay. On a traditional desktop workstation it's an utter pain the ass.

I'm getting more people using OPera...........mainly because of the built in email client!
