Giving the Knuck a new coat of paint.
« on: July 01, 2011, 10:34:40 PM »
:)

A couple of weeks ago, Richo did an upgrade to SMF 2.0.

SMF, (Simple Machines Forum,) is the software that makes everything around here work.

It was a necessary and I'm sure not easy upgrade but it fucked over some of what Richo had customized for the old 1.x line.

On top of which, Richo is a bit time poor at the moment and so I've been tasked with giving the Knuck a bit of a touch up.

Over the next few days, I'm either going to find us a new theme and customize it, or take a hammer to the CSS for the current one.

I'm thinking a new theme, specifically designed for 2.0 would be easier, but I've not really delved into it yet.

Also, I do not have and do not want access to the server. That's not just Knuck, it's all of Dudeworld.com.au and I simply would not want that level of access, even if it was offered.

That however means I have to be a bit careful in that if I break something from the admin panel, I have to hand it over to Richo to fix and that would rather defeat the purpose of my being an admin.

I'm going to setup a test forum, hosted on a server I have access to and try out new themes there.

I'd appreciate any help in testing new themes before I pick one to go live with here.

I'll post a link to the test forum once I have it up and running.

So, I think I've found us the beginnings of a new theme.

For the moment, I've changed the forum settings so that members can select their own theme.

For anyone who wants to help with testing, go to your profile, click modify profile, look and layout preferences and then select Bad Company 3.

I'm thinking that basic theme, only with the skulls and crossbones from the current theme and the old exploding Knucklehead Saloon logo up at the top where it now says Dudeworld.com.au.

I'm a little time poor myself with a lunch to cook tomorrow and a week when I have two training courses and my boss arriving and staying here from Wednesday through Friday, but will take a look - I trust you to get it right anyway :)

No, it's not my first dance with a SMF theme.

At the same time, it's always nice to have a second opinion.

Can you host up the suggestion so a few of us can take a look?

I'm not familiar with the way in the US but here we get a few MB of free space to play with so it's effectively an off-line site but can be viewed - here's an example from my new company that a developer mate is working on:

http://www.redcloud.net.au/RCtest01.html

That's not publicly view-able but useful for us to work together on getting the published site up - It's also weeks old, and is a lot more advanced now :)

Happy to look over your shoulder :)

Cheers

Edit: Oh, sorry, you already said you are going to do that, just pm the link to myself, Jeff and Kate, should be enough. :)

Wooh!!!

Nice theme for Knuck, bit of personalisation, clean up some issues that  the theme probably addresses any way and look likes a winner to me :)

Comments ? :)

Ok, played around for a bit - messages as in PMs need to be out on the bar, bit hard to find otherwise, I don't mind the background image, but your choice, and the jump to came right back - haven't tested quotes yet, but assume it will be the same :)

Will keep playing. :)

Cheers

edit: Just tested quote, look great :)

edit 2: And smilies are back :) What else was there Jeff? It's looking great Jamie :)

I don't like the background image myself and I want to tweaks the colors for the quote tags a bit.

The current plan is to put that theme up somewhere that I have server access, customize it and then copy it over to here.

edit:

The quote tags are fine it's the stickies I don't like the looks of.

I think a chat with the CSS is in the near future.  ;:n

I know you are still modifying Bad Company 3 but the stickies in the Knuck with the grey background are difficult to read.

Yeah, I know.

I've not actually modified anything yet.

The Bad Company theme is entirely someone else's work.

I need to put together a test site, where I have server access and then I can start modifying that theme and then copy it back here.

The very useful "new" link on the end of a thread title is not coming up in Chrome, would like that one sorted, and I'd guess you will need a "chat" with CSS to link it properly - it is one of the best nav features ever :)

Cheers

Edit: Had you noticed 2.0 Gold was released June 11? I think that was after Richo did the upgrade, worth a look :)

Cheers

You sure about the new thing not showing up?

It's showing up for me but it's not an icon, just the word new and the text kind of disappears into the background.

My plan is to replace that with the new image from the old theme.

Either 2.0 Gold is just another name for the same release or Richo did another upgrade I don't know about.

Regardless, according to the admin panel, we have the latest version available.

Cool - I checked dates, it came out 11th, Richo upgraded 16th, so I guess we got the latest.

"New" in Chrome comes up as the generic "I'm an icon" thing, but it works, just doesn't say "new," trivial to fix :)

So, the first coat of paint is done.

I want to bring back the skulls we had before but need Richo for that. I should have been able to do that myself but it was doing my head in and so I finally gave up.

Simple to do from the server and so I'll pass that one off to Richo.

I know the stickies are fugly, going to work on that in the next day or two.

The smilies are back as is the jump to box, which I personally never use but it seems others do.

Please let me know of anything else that isn't working.

Something I should add...

Members will now see the profile button on the top right hand of the page and mods will also see the admin link there.

No, I don't know why someone would code a theme that way and I don't off the top of my head know how to move them back where they should be but I'll definitely be looking into that.

Also, as I said before, I'd really appreciate feedback from other members, especially those running something different from what I am.

I'm viewing the site with FF 4.0, running on Win 7 and I had a brief view with both IE and Opera, but I'd still appreciate feedback.

Yeah, the new thing never did work for me.

I see a link that says "new" but there's not an image and so the "new" kind of blends into the rest of the text.

That one's on the list, as well as replacing the new and no new post icons.

Problem there is, I don't have and don't want server access, Richo is flat out with real life, which is why I'm the one doing this in the first place and we're about 16 hours apart...

yeah i'd ;like offer to help and all, but i have nfi about this shite :P, however i can point out shit you may have noticed, like for Eg:

at the bottom right below where your reading this.. yes thats it, look down :P ... the background color for the links ...

Move Topic
Remove Topic
Lock topic
Set topic sticky
Merge Topics
Link to Calendar

It doesnt extent all the way to the left, that or its the same color as the background, it seems to end right in the middle of the "set topic sticky" link .. also.. wtf is with the calendar link.. think we can shotgun that one :P

Im sure soon as i have time i'll look a lot more closely usen opera and point out many many more thinks ( or maybe i wont :P ) .

Appreciate your work Mc :)

Not my fault you're choosing to use a shitty browser,,,

Seriously, using FF, I'm having no trouble at all but come tomorrow, when I'm sober, I'll have a look with IE, Chrome and Opera.
