Got me a new phone.
« on: April 18, 2011, 07:19:15 PM »
Not a fan of smart phones, but I ended up getting me a smarter phone.

And do you know just how damn hard it is to get a Nokia these days that's just a damn phone?

I wanted:
A phone with normal phone buttons.
A phone without a touchscreen.
A phone for <$30 a month.

I got:
A phone with a QWERTY keypad.
A phone without a touchscreen.
A phone for <$30 a month.

I could have got a phone for <$30 a month, without a QWERTY keypad, but it had a touchscreen.
I could have got a phone without a QWERTY keypad and without a touchscreen, but it was $49 a month.

I got a Nokia E5.
http://www.nokia.com.au/find-products/all-phones/nokia-e5

I'd rather have a QWERTY keypad than a touchscreen.

Looks like a pretty practical phone.

Except the mini keyboard, I can't use them, thick skin from handling hot steel,
does nothing for your fingertip sensitivity.
Whatever

I chose touchscreen only because of the dust and grit in my trade.

The simple old "candy bar" phones were great.

Have you seen the problems that Vodafone have been having lately? As for Telslut, I'd rather go without than deal with them.

yeah i just transfered from 3 to voda (yes im aware voda now owns 3, but they are still separate systems)  and now i have reception here, sure it might only be 2 vars of 3g, but its a steady 2 bars, unlike 3's which is was something along the lines of 1 bar... no signal... 1hr later, 1 bar.... no signal ... also to note so far, voda customer service has been fast and actually useful , although still indian call center , so still hard to bloody understand.

As for telstar.. yeah me to, but i have to admit after haven a work phone through them, their shit just works, and works well.

no comments on the last phone, which seems to me, to be just what you wanted, and lets you pick any plan u want from anyone pretty much :P

Having a camera comes in handy, especially when I have a prang, or someone near me does.

I didn't think it was possible to get a phone without an inbuilt camera, is why.

 :)

Cell phones are an example, a classic one, of utterly decadent technology - whatever you get these days is going to have features you'll never use.

I went a while back for a Samsung Galaxy S - for one simple reason - I could read the fucking screen - No Jamie, I'm not blind, but the last phone, whose memory I have suppressed, was ridiculous in that regard.

Katren got one as well but could not deal with a touch screen, I don't mind them, we sorted out a deal with Middy and he now has her Galaxy and she has an E-5, seems happy with it, or at least as happy as she is with any piece of tech beyond a stapler :)

When you have to print up a sheet of instructions on how to turn on the TV and switch between Foxtel, DVD/VCR and Wii, you realise you are not living with a techno-child :)

Is cool, I'm a very technical boy, she is spiritual in ways I will never understand but utterly appreciate, and at least she is no longer swearing at the phone :)

Cheers

:)

I can relate, there's hardly a week goes by that I don't have to "fix" the TV in the living room.

"Fixing" it consists of make sure the TV turned on, make sure the CATV box is turned on and make sure the TV is set for line inputs.

Oh and on the multifunction remote, if you want to control the TV, you push the button that says TV first. If you want to control the CATV box, you push the button that says CATV. If you want to control the DVD player, you push, well you get the idea....  rofl

Agree on decadence of cell phones these days.

I may have mentioned this before, but Melanie and I have the same phones, I got them about a year ago.

Among other things, you can plug a laptop into it and use it as a CDMA modem.

That's a wonderfully useful function for a girl who neither has nor wants anything to do with a computer.

 rofl rofl rofl

Sounds familiar... :)

In some ways my 'phone is smarter than this notebook I'm typing on, but as long as it rings and calls its about all I care about :)

I've threatened  a smart remote a few times, you can guess the reaction :)

Cheers

I don't particularly care if mine doesn't ring.

:)

I've never met a touchscreen anything that I didn't hate.

I think I mentioned this in one of our previous phone discussions, but there have been times that I've gotten so frustrated with touchscreen POS terminals that I've resorted to using the mouse instead.

I also once demolished one.

By punching it.

But, at least I used my fist and not a .45.  :P

Galaxy S is capacitance as well - works fine for me, and for Middy - didn't for Katren, she must save all her spark to sparkle :)
