The things people throw away.
« on: April 15, 2011, 06:58:01 AM »
Last week a bloke at work was giving away a couple of broken PCs with some peripherals.

One PC was a 2.6GHz Celeron Acer with 40MB hard drive (his words!), the other was a Dell with 80MB hard drive. There was also a 14" LCD and a wireless keyboard/mouse set up. So I grabbed it. When I got it all home, I started hooking shit up. The acer I'm not so impressed with, because it's a celly and only has 512MB of RAM. It would boot, but the hard drive was cactus. I haven't gone any further than that with it.

The LCD is an Acer AL511 (15"), which is quite handy. I'm using that for the file server now.

The Dell turned out to be a 3GHz P4 with 1GB of RAM. To make things even better, it came with an XP SP1a disc (which I don't use 'cos it takes so damn long to install the other service packs) and a couple of SATA ports on the mobo. I've now got it set up with a pair of 2TB HDDs and it's my file server. Much happier with this setup than the old FreeNAS setup, file transfers are much quicker.

Yesterday I saw an ad on the internal classifieds, a guy was giving away an Antec case with PSU. I saw the ad 2 minutes after it was posted, so got on to him straight away. Luckily, I was first in and within half an hour of knocking off work I had this little beauty in my hands.

Damn.

I need to work where you do.  :-*

I'm to the other extreme in that I have shit I should have junked a long time ago but  yeah, some people throw away perfectly good shit.

The girl who cuts my hair being a great example.

She's cut my hair for going on 20 years and so we generally sit and chat for a while after she's done with my hair.

One afternoon, we got to talking about computers and she told me she had one she "had to throw away" because "it couldn't be fixed."

From what she described, it was a bit of malware that her kids, having infected it in the first place, told her it couldn't be fixed and so she just threw it away.

Unfortunately, I didn't find out about it until long after the fact.

A lot of highly paid public servants who would rather see it go to someone who can use it rather than just throw it out. Or a lot of highly paid public servants who see it as being easier to buy a replacement than it is to spend 5 minutes replacing a graphics card.

Not really. It's also not as bad as it seems.

6 months ago my supervisor got a temp transfer to another directorate within our branch and I'd been doing her job, and getting paid accordingly. Late last month, that transfer became permanent.

My Director wanted to go to open recruitment, HR talked him into internal (within the Defence Department) recruitment first. Via that process, he found someone suitable for the role, someone who I've worked with in the past and who is far better suited to the role than I am.

So that extra $250 a week after tax, I've just been pissing up against the wall and in a month's time I'll be back to $70k/pa, which is still plenty of money. So much money, in fact, that next week I should be getting my new car.

When I do get the new car, I'll post all about it.

You could halve their salaries and the country would be no better off.

Yeah....

If you're making $70K AFTER the pay cut then no, I won't be shedding any tears for you.

More than likely, many public servants would leave for the private sector, those left would do even less and there'd be even less chance of attracting quality staff.

I just scored a P4 in an Antec case with 15" monitor and Logitech speakers!
All in new condition. Local garage guy got me to get a new lappy for home and he said 'take all this bulky shit away!'

Hrmmm...Just worked out that I have an Acer restore disc. I wonder if...

A) It will work with the PC it came with now that I've formatted the HDDs and;
B) If it will work on the other PC I have, which, while it's an Acer case, isn't an Acer mobo.

Fun times ahead. Both cases have COAs, I may just install a dodgy copy of Windows and sell them like that.

A will work. A HDD format isn't that big of deal from the view of Windoze authentication.

Not so sure on B. With a different MOBO, Windoze may well see it as an entirely different system and really, it is.

I'll be interested to hear how B turns out.

Regardless, why a "dodgy" copy of Widows?

I'm sure someone around here has a legit copy you could "borrow."

Getting my hand on a copy of Windows isn't the problem, it's getting a version that will accept the serial number on the case.

I have an OLD XP disk.

It is, in the realm of tech as old as the person who sent it to me.

*Looks around for ZimmerMan.*  ;)

You'd have to sit through installing the service packs, but otherwise, it should be fine for what you need to do.

I'll give the restore discs a go first. As it turns out, it looks like they both have Acer motherboards in them.

I've just chucked a P4 CPU in the one I got for nix last week, replacing the 2.6GHz Celeron. I think the newer CPU is 2.8GHz. Now to play around and see what I've got in the way of RAM.
