Level 10
« on: January 24, 2011, 05:03:43 PM »
Hardman suggested I post up the new beast I've recently built.

Before I get down to the nitty gritty .....yes I know I'm an idiot. Yes I know I got more money than brains. Yes I know its as ugly as fuck. Yes I know I could have got WAY better for cheap. Okay, now that's out of the way ....

As anyone who knows me, I've been building and modding PCs for around 10+ years. From plasma plates, to    Vapochill phase cooling, blah blah blah

Maybe I'm just getting old and can't be bothered anymore. But I wanted to build one last monster WITHOUT having to take to it with a dremel and a pair of pliers. I searched online for ages and found a bunch of cases that could do a number of things. But it was always the case (pun intended) of one case being practical, yet looking like a dog box.

I found a few rare cases that looked okay, definitely could fit the gear I wanted, but I dunno, just didn't leave me sitting there not thinking about "If I cut that section out, and extend that there ..."

Then by happen chance I stumbled on the Thermaltake Level 10 case. At first I was WTF? I couldn't figure out if I liked it, or hated it. But one thing was for sure, it was definitely different. Once I figured out that I could indeed like it with a few modifications, I figured what the heck, my days of modding will continue for ONE LAST CASE!

So I jumped online and found an Aus distributor and OMFG!!!! $845 dollars? I couldn't believe it. For a feckin PC case?  Is it gold lined or something?

What a battle that pursued in my brain for the next few days over this case. OK I can afford it. I'm not rich, but I don't party, I don't go to disco's, casinos or have affairs with money hungry blonde bimbos. I work, I save and I reward myself with things that bring me pleasure. One being a killer gaming rig.

Taking to a $845 dollar chasis with a dremel and a pair of pliers? (uses cockney accent) NOT BLOODY LIKELY!

But then it hit me. My days of modding can indeed be over. With one foul swoop I can be rid of this modding addiction and be FREE!!!!

Who in their right mind would have the guts, not to mention the endless wealth to mess with a $845 dollar chasis? Not this black duck!

With that, I blew off the cobwebs from the credit card and purchased the Level 10.

In the flesh? Its a massive piece of kit. Looks way better in real life than in pictures. But the real test is the build process. I love building PCs. I love the smell of new hardware, and when I build a PC (for my own personal use) I take my time, I enjoy the moment and take great pleasure from the whole experience.

Nothing worse than building a PC and face problem after problem. Its usually then that the dremel and pliers come out and I exact revenge upon it. The Level 10 was PURE bliss. A lot of effort went into the design, and I can say it was a pleasure to work with. Cable management almost gave me an erection.  rofl

From unboxing to turning on, the entire process was trouble free and REALLY helped me come to terms with spending $845 dollars on a PC chasis. A few reviews I read said you can't fit watercooling into this case, and it won't fit any E-ATX motherboards. Don't believe everything you read.

She's loaded with a Asus Rampage Extreme III motherboard, and watercooling, running an i7 920 @ 4.2GHz - 24/7

Its cool and quite, which is something I've not had the pleasure of in quite some time. Why I ever put up with numerous fans screaming in the background .....

I'll be honest, it aint worth $845 dollars. Its a fantastic piece of kit. Besides price, I have no complaints about it. And if I'm going to be REALLY honest, I SOOOOOO want to take to it with the dremel and pliers.

Its just screaming for some perspex windows and a slick paint job. But I just can't afford to fuck it up  :P

If I hacked it, the missus will have my balls hanging from the wall as ornaments. I like my balls ....

Thanks for taking the time to act on my suggestion mate.

I think they're a beautiful case actually and Thermaltake are always sweet to work in, have had a few.

Don't they do a window side option?

They have with other cases.

Sweet rig, I guess once life settles I might build another but for now I'm totally happy on portables, four of them but suit what I'm up to :)

Cheers

LOL no chance of that happening. Atm I'm just enjoying it as is. Picked up a 3TB and another SSD to fill all 6 HDD bays. There isn't anything else to be done now.

I was tinkering with the idea before the build of going all out on a new CPU too. But seeing as the 920 is such a great little overclocker, 4.2GHz is plenty enough in that department.

One day when its time to upgrade, I can see this monstrosity in the lounge set up as a HTPC. I think it would make a funky kind of addition to a high end lounge set up.

So many ideas - so little money  ;)

I've long said I'd like to build a monster desktop but even if I had the money, I keep asking myself, what for?

For what that case cost, I could buy a mid-range lappie that would do everything I need to do computer wise.

Yeah, but like me you don't game much if at all.

Globey is a hard core gamer and damned good at it as well. Games are becoming if they are not already extremely demanding of hardware, it's not unusual to see a new game come out that hardware available at the time struggles to even run.

Besides every man has to have some hobbies, Globely loves his computers and his cars and is a very good cook, like us. :)

We'll have to see if we can get him to post up the tutorial he did once before in the other place for okonomiaki, which I probably spelled wrong ;)

Globey you may not know our Jamie (McClean) he's an American, but we can forgive him that cos he's a great guy and lives in Tennessee, the land of good bourbon (which he takes full advantage of :) )

He's been threatening to build his own machine ever since I met him years back now on another forum and I've often offered to help him through it although he is damned IT savvy anyway, just not with hardware assembly - yet.

He's a mod here, hell, half the place are mods, which is ironic since apart from spam we hardly mod at all :)

He was a huge help during the melt-down, he did the data mining to help save what we could of the old place, Richo coded up the new site and I and some friends swatted the fucking crackers who hit us in the first place, which was quite a long task, it was a world-wide assault on many forums, mostly but not all SMF based.

Anyway, I showed your case to a couple of addicted builders I know last night and I think they both had orgasms - they didn't know it existed and agreed with me that it is a real breakthrough in case design. :)

I'll not be at all surprised if they both don't buy one :)

I had a look around at a couple of reviews as well, the thermal design is what gets me, why did no one think of it sooner?

Cheers

Sorry.  The first thing I noticed was the valve amp for your headphones...   ::a ::a ::a ::a

Nice case..  Even the dog looks happy with it.

I know I'd get strung up and shot by the missus if I even thought about a case like that.  I think I've got a budget of about $800 all up for a future media PC, but that's some time away yet.

ROFL! That bloody valve AMP ALWAYS steals the spotlight. I posted up my case on another forum, and all I got was people inquiring about the bloody valve AMP. I ended up making an entirely new thread dedicated to the bloody thing   rofl

I'm spewing atm as those Sennheiser 414s you see in the pic are my spare/reserve headphones. My "real" headphones are in the U.S apparently ....

I have a set of GRADO GS1000 headphones that where sent to the U.S on the 03/09/10 and I've still not received them back. Doesn't say much for Grado, which I'm very sad to say, as I think they make one of the best headphones in the world. (factoring price of coarse)

But as far as warranty is concerned, they have been VERY slack at getting me back my beloved cans. Its funny but once upon a time I would have been so content with the Sennheiser's, now its like ARGHH I can't stand them. I SOOO want my Grado's.

The AMP, if your interested, is called the MP5 by a mob called DARED (Aus comapany)  Don't be fooled if you look them up and see the dreaded word CHINA anywhere. These amps are quality items.

24K pure gold PCB, NOS key resistors (US made)  Japanese Rubycon coupling capacitors, Japanese Nippon filter and bypass capacitors, Japanese Fuji diodes, US-made BurrBrown PCM2702E DAC and Philips TDA7265 chips, rear-mounted gold-plated analog inputs, gold-contact tube sockets.

They take 12AX7s. Its by no means HIGH end equipment. Hell that high end stuff is out of reach of a mere mortal like myself. But for the money, the MP5 unit is as good as it gets. It comes with a USB cable, a pair of RCA interconnects, adapters and cables for iPhone/iPod/MP3 and so on.

If you use an iPod or iPhone for tunes, the MP5 coupled with a pair of nice cans or quality speakers will not disappoint. I have mine hooked up to the PC and have surprised a few people at just how good my set up sounds. (with headphones) As far as speakers go, there next on the list. Atm my speakers are cheap and nasty.

I have my eye on a beautiful set of Audioengine 5 speakers, that I'll be purchasing asap. LOL I've been saying that for over 12 months now  :D

You STILL haven't got those Grados back!?!

That 's bloody appalling, good cans they may be, but without support no company can really survive.

Those speakers are sweet, know a guy has some, well worth the money.

I don't use cans much, keep a very old  pair of HD-414s around for very, very occasional use and replace the ear pads every few years, but I've listened to both Grados and AKGs, in my opinion it's too close to call but using a valve amp probably would sway the balance for Grado, wood and tubes go very well together.

On the downside I spoke to a mate in the industry who used to sell Grado and he became fed-up with the poor after-sales service of Grado. He said keep hassling them.

Glad you agree Wallacey, I'm out of the case market at the moment, all portables, but I'd look at that one, looks like the perfect case for those who chop and change components a lot, and the thermal is awesome.
