Time to clean the keyboard?
« on: January 23, 2011, 06:27:44 PM »
According to Mrs Wallacey, it is.

And, seeing as how the lady has a way with words, I've decided to give it a clean. First up, most of the keys came off and went into a dishwashing liquid solution for a soak and some agitation. Then I brushed the base, but that still left a lot of gunk. Now, I've never cleaned a keyboard before, so I'm just making this shit up as I go along. Bear with me.

Because the dry brush didn't work so well, and because my alcowipes aren't so alcoholic now (must get some more to top the container up a bit!), I decided to head to the sink with the keyboard with a scrubbing brush. Yes, I disconnected it first. It looks a lot better, only wet.

It's outside now drying, so I'll leave it there until tomorrow afternoon. With the dry weather we've been having, it should dry with no worries. Yes, I did unplug it before I got it wet.

Here's a pic of it before it went in the sink.

If it doesn't work, I won't be all that upset, I've had it for bloody years now, it cost me $50 back when MS were giving a $25 cash back on them. Worst case scenario, I've gotta buy a new keyboard. Or I could stick with this one that I'm using now (the spare) until I upgrade the whole PC (thinking of going mini-ITX with onboard GFX).

They usually wash up ok, although my last, a Razer, was dying other ways in any event. New basic MS boards are like $20 so not a bank-breaker.

Sam, I have the EXACT keyboard you have.

It was like 30 bucks back in 2005.

Why not save yourself the trouble and just buy a new one?

Where everything out here ain't what it seems
When I'm down to nothing, I just go ahead and dream
And face the fact that I'm a circle in a world full of squares

'Cos I'm a tight bastard, is why. Besides, I like that keyboard. And I feel that I have a certain level of 'street cred', for want of a better term, by having worn some of the keys down.

My boards always seem to die through one of the commonly used keys failing, the last one it was the back arrow.

All keyboards get filthy, sad fact of life, even membranes need a clean, but they're shit to type on anyway.

A private school here replaces every board in the school every year and cleans them in between, all based on someone reading that the average keyboard has more germs than a toilet seat. (Ever tried typing in gloves though ? :)

E is the most commonly used letter.

Yet your A and T are most worn, unusual.

My E is most worn, followed by the T, then the A.

Math fail. According to what I was taught at school, it adds up to 12.

Commonest = 1
Used = 1
Letter = 2
The = 1
Alphabet = 1
Figures = 1
Seven = 2
Sentence = 2
Alone = 1.

well this is the first key board i have had that has had the windows key removed and the tab key ground down to a small stub for gaming, mainly  cause,well, its a G15 GAMING keyboard,i dont seem to clip the tab very often, and it has a wonderful switch that kills that damn annoying and rarely used windows key :p

My old key boards always got one of 2 questions... why the fuck do u missing keys and a  little tab thingy ??, or ohh so your a gamer are you?? :p

because sam, when ur in a full screen game and u clip the win key it takes u outta the game.. and some games really dont like that, and if your not  running a fairly new system and can take a while to get back into ur game.
