:)

I have this real belief in synergy sometimes, or coincidence, call it what you will. I'm sitting here doing some documentation work on Easter Monday (don't ask) and a mate pops up who until a couple of years ago was flying this:

NOT the aircraft I'm hinting at but shares the characteristic that makes them unusual :)

When I was flying biz jets I never quite understood the Hansa, Lears and -125s, way sexier, but apparently it is/was an absolute delight to fly :)

It's a weird world sometimes, the 320 was not a big success, and sort of disappeared but my mate was flying some German industrialist around in one until the guy was confined to a nursing home - apparently he would not fly on an aircraft made in the US :)

So, dunno if that helps :)

Cheers

Certainly was something different - the reverse-swept wings set it apart .    ::X

Welcome back !!

Yep, reverse sweep, very unusual, so given the other clues what aircraft am I hiding ? :)

No takers :)

Let's see... reverse swept wings, let's add taking parts from an F5 and an F16 and see what you get :)

I'd have loved to fly this bird actually - it even made it to the cover of Popular Mechanics :)

I'm going to have to make this a bit easier it seems:

This is a snippet of what the aircraft looks like, does that help?

Did this thread finally die?

I made this one about as easy as I could in the end - the answer is written there :)

The Hansa further up the page mate, the single seater is the one I'm after :)

Certainly is :)

A most interesting research aircraft, really only made possible by composites the twisting moment on a forward swept wing would literally twist a metal wing clean off the aircraft. If you look at the Hansajet the sweep of the forward edge of the wings is very modest compared to the X29.

There are some big potential advantages to the configuration, especially for fighters in terms of agility. With the Hansajet the primary reason apart from being a novelty in the ranks of bizjets was that the wing allowed reasonably high cruise speed combined with a lower stall speed making for both slower landing speed and shorter take off and landing rolls.

To date though it hasn't really caught on with fighters, the latest is the Sukhoi SU-47 but that was purely experimental although Sukhoi are said to still be working on a FSW fighter.

Guess that means you are up Smokey :)

 :)

A long time ago in this thread Whiteglove posted a comment of if anyone was working on the Switchblade:

http://air-attack.com/page/9/Switchblade.html

I've no idea but it is sort of rare that any research at Edwards does not bear fruit eventually - looked like a pretty good outcome for FSW research to me.

I have found myself more than once looking at the whole FSW concept and thinking that you could so easily take one more step and have a variable geometry design that could be all three, highly swept for very high speed dash, straight for best slow speed and FSW for up to around !.6 Mach extreme maneuvering.

I'd take that over the billions being blown on stealth any day :)

OK, This jet was the family child of a jet with a very famous name. The name of the forbear really became famous in its second incarnation. US Navy, circa 1948

Between the hint and Google I'll hazard a guess on the McDonnell Banshee.

Banshee was essentially a re-work of the Phantom 1, apparently very good aircraft, saw a deal of combat in Korea and was in the book Bridges at Toko Ri but strangely was changed in the movie.

Good one Kiwi :)

:)

Blackie once said I think that we could never run out of aircraft and I think he is right, take a wander here:

http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/

Some years ago I did with a couple of friends, many, many aircraft yet to feature in the thread.

Or here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Air_Force_Museum

Apparently it is incredible, not been, obvious reasons :) but we do not get a lot of red metal in the thread :)

Or here and browse :)

http://www.warbirdalley.com/museum.htm

Meantime to let you off the hook, very, very few aircraft ever get to fly with both the USAF and the USN, an iconic one did, which one? :)
