Modding your profile.
« on: February 29, 2008, 09:34:14 PM »
 :)

I posted this in the welcome to Texas thread, but Richo ask me to put it up as a separate sticky and so, here it is.

I know this more logically goes in the Gunfighters Rest, but I thought I’d put it up in the Shottie for now, so everybody will have a chance to see it.

Here are some changes I suggest everybody make to the account. In my experience with SMF, these tweaks make the board a bit easier to navigate and in my opinion, should be enabled by default anyway.

First, go to your profile and click on look and layout preferences. Tick the box that says Return to topics after posting by default. and the box that says Show most recent personal messages at top.

Save that and then, click on where it says personal message options and tick these two boxes, Save a copy of each Personal Message in my outbox by default and Show a popup when you receive new messages?

Also, in your personal message options, you can select whether you want to automatically be notified via email when you receive a new personal message.

A few more suggestions, in addition to what I made before.

On your profile, click on notifications and email and then, just have read of what you can do there. Personally, I turn off all of the notification options off, except for the one to Receive forum announcements and important notifications by email. Basically, that one lets you receive a mass email from the forum admin. I once did that on a forum after we were forced to move to a new URL, I used the mass email option to notify everyone of the new URL. The people who had receive forum announcements option turned off, never got the email and so, never heard we were back up. Over a year later, we still have lost children finding their way back home.  :o

Okay, well I do have some other ideas I’m going to run by Richo, but I think that’s about it for now.

While you're at it LD, go to your profile and fix your signature.  :P

The size tags got borked in the migration. Mine was the same way as yours.

Thats a hangover from the perl > php conversion, BC.  Every users post before the migration is listing that user as a "guest"

Unfortunately I really don't want to try and hack up the database to try and marry them all up.. the consequence of getting that wrong is potentially horrendous !!

I'm happy just to let it go.

Also it does have an upside. It'll quickly show you the pre migration posts !

Guest posting is disabled from all the boards so all new guests are unable to do that.

Dunno. The powers that be ( :P ) have been fixing a few peoples' avs, but I don't see an option in the profile settings.

Temporary fix - just slap a white border on it to bring it up to 150X150 or so.

I'm not sure on that one and even if I did, I don't have high enough access to change anything.

I would suggest that you instead of linking your avatar, that you try uploading it directly to the forum and see if that helps.

That's how I fixed Jake's.

Well that's a simple fix!

You're probably going to get a few more peeps bringing up this issue - worth adding to the original post?

Yeah, I could do that, but I'm not sure what Richo has planned there regarding a new theme, maximum size of attachments, resizing of attachments, etc.

SMF does a really good job of resizing avatars, but there are different ways to do it and they has to be specifically enabled and I don't know what Richo has done/is going to do in that regard.

The main thing, in my opinion anyway, is to get a new theme up, once we see how things looks with the final theme, then we can start tidying up some.

Once everything is set up, I don't think we'll have the avatar issue. Both external and uploaded avatars can be resized by the forum itself and so, they'll look they same, regardless of how they're uploaded.
